Gaming Industry: Performance Review

Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s May 2018 decision that overturned the national sports wagering ban, a number of established gaming companies and sports betting operators have seized opportunities to enter new markets and explore fresh avenues to expand the reach of their brands. Major players including MGM Resorts International (MGM), Caesars Entertainment, Inc. (CZR) and William Hill US (WIMHY) have forged relationships with professional sports leagues and teams across the country, paving the way for new partnerships likely to be replicated by others in the future. In addition, regional operators continue to make moves in this evolving market space. For example, Boyd Gaming recently announced a strategic partnership with FanDuel Group. Sports wagering is legal and active in a half dozen or so states, and that number is expected to escalate in the coming years. In addition to the latest activity in the sports wagering world, a handful of company performances are included as well.

REMAINING NIMBLE: How to Weather Bad Seasons and Extend the Good

Every industry goes through ebbs and flows and different seasons when it comes to valuations and perceptions by analysts and investors. Sometimes the big companies in an industry seem to cruise along and show outsized growth, impressing analysts and investors with steadily improving margins, well-perceived capital investments, and more. Basically, they can do no wrong. But, during those times it can often be a struggle for smaller companies to make an impact. Perception among investors may be that there is no room for these competitors, and no way they can compete against larger, well-funded companies with experienced and deep management teams.

Planning for
the Unexpected:

PROTECTING YOURSELF AND YOUR
FAMILY WITH ESTATE PLANNING

For many of us, estate planning is something we know we should do but often manage to postpone until some indefinite time in the future. But, putting off this part of your financial life could mean passing over an opportunity to preserve the lifestyle you’ve worked so hard to create and to dictate your legacy on your terms.

Why You Need an Estate Plan

The primary purpose of estate planning is to ensure that you control how your assets are distributed. Estate planning is also about planning for unexpected events, such as physical and mental impairment, which may place financial strain on your family.

National Gaming Results

2019 National Gaming Growth Forecast

The drivers for the casino gaming industry: employment, income and to a lesser extent gas prices. We find these are in weak to moderate growth position although we see gas prices recovering from the hurricanes and rising. However, with inflation tracking at +2% to +3% there is little “real” wage/income growth however lower taxes have appeared to boost overall employment which translates into more available dollars.

INFORMATION SECURITY USING INTELLIGENT AGENTS

Not too long ago it was possible for a security engineer – based on his or her knowledge and expertise – to manually review logs and monitor network traffic to identify anomalous patterns that may have indicated a threat or a breach in the information security infrastructure. Since then, the size of security logs and network traffic has exploded exponentially. In addition, the threat level is now more sophisticated, to the point that it is not possible or effective to dedicate manpower to these tasks.

THE HUBRIS OF COMPLIANCE

In many industries that have Information Security requirements, particularly Gaming, there is a commonly held misconception that compliance equals security. Not only is this idea wrong, it can lead many organizations to, pardon the pun, have a false sense of security.

“Our auditors found nothing remiss with our deployment of [insert system or application here].” Every time I hear this, or something similar, I cringe.

Compliance, as defined by Merriam Webster’s dictionary is: conformity in fulfilling official requirements. It is a set of specific things that are minimally required to operate your business.

Optimizing Purchased Services

Data, we are drowning in it. But how can we use machine learning and BI to help purchasing managers make educated decisions around their key vendors? There are many different software solutions that make up enterprise ecosystems for hospitality, hotel/casinos and transportation companies. While my past few articles have focused on customer-facing digital mobility solutions, we should also look at solutions that help operators control costs around the purchasing and supply chain.

The Power of BI: Improve Profits Throughout Your Hotel

Big data has become a cornerstone of business strategy for companies looking to improve. But true visionaries understand it’s how a business uses that data – the analysis, slicing/dicing and insights gleaned from it – that truly propels a business forward. Therein lies the magic of business intelligence (BI). BI comprises the practical and technological infrastructure that collects and analyzes data from disparate internal and external sources, transforming it into easy-to-digest, actionable insights to inform decision-making and improve business performance. The world’s top industry sectors have long benefited from the use of BI. Nearly everyone has experienced Amazon’s algorithm-based system that seems to know what we want to purchase before we do. But within the hotel industry, BI has been comparatively underutilized.

Grow Guest Satisfaction and Refine the Dining Experience with Next-Gen Payment Capabilities

The year is 2019, and technology is converging with table service in a profound way. It’s being led in the U.S. by the transition to EMV payments. Chip cards, and their NFC-enabled equivalent, require interaction by the guest, necessitating the availability of payments at the table. This simple logistical shift has the potential to influence much more in fine-dining and other environments than simply eliminating the inefficient, fraud-filled “card dance” that currently takes place at the table whenever a guest pays their check.

Entertaining Reinvention

When I wrote “This Old House,” I talked primarily about updating yourself so you don’t look like an out-of-date candidate. This article addresses the same issue, but from a currently working executive position and our constant battle to stay relevant and new.

Recently I heard Nikki Glaser say on her show that entertainers who last a long time in the entertainment business must constantly reinvent themselves to match the changing world. I realized it’s not just entertainers. The audience for them may be larger, but the truth is that we all must reinvent ourselves to match the world. Our goal must be a constant reinvention of our methods and attitudes.

Five years ago, LGBT was just that – LGBT. Now it has expanded to LGBTQQIP2AA. (I think I have that right, and I apologize if I do not.) And service animals were used for very specific needs – not for everything up to and including comfort and anxiety. No matter your belief or your history, you are required to embrace these changes in our society and incorporate them into our structure.

2019 Business Perspectives

Security

The Internet has certainly changed our lives and the ways we utilize technology. New devices and innovations have given us the power to connect with our guests and fellow team members in ways never imagined before. Now everyone has cellular devices and phones that they carry with them everywhere. In hotels, we can communicate with guests before arrival and they can book rooms, make reservations for outlets, check In and out, use their phone for a room key, call for service, and order room service right through their devices. Internally, we can communicate with our team members through text and social media. The greatest challenge to IT is the security of connected devices. If safeguards are not put in place to protect our data, it may undermine privacy and deepen surveillance. How we react to increasing cyberattacks and cybercrime will be our greatest challenge for the future of the Internet and our company.

2018 Annual G&L Gaming and Hospitality Industry Awards

Platinum Award

Innovation Award: GLI
Transformation Award: Gaming Analytics
Partner Award: Playersoft

This was a milestone year for our industry’s Annual Gaming & Hospitality Awards. 2018 marks the 10th year the awards have been presented – each year recognizing the best technology products available in our combined industries. I remember in the early days the G&L Roundtable was referred to as the CIO Roundtable, because in addition to other CXO titles, it hosts more gaming CIOs in one private forum in North America than any other event of its kind. It was in that first decade of the Roundtable that the need for unbiased, customer created and judged awards were first conceptualized by the G&L Board and Roundtable Colleagues. The Gaming & Leisure organization brought these goals to life and has not only hosted the awards each year since, but has ensured these awards maintained the highest level of integrity by always being free-to-enter worldwide, and never “pay to play,” so that all companies could enter and be evaluated by their current and potential client base using the same sound and unbiased methodology. The original vision of encouraging and rewarding innovation and game-changing technology, along with high levels of customer service, is and continues to be at the forefront of the awards mission. These values are as important today as they were when they were first conceived for the past decade. The evaluation process starts with vendors completing the detailed entry packet for consideration of their products and services, and the G&L Board Members and Roundtable Colleagues review, judge and select the award recipients for the year. The G&L Board Members and Roundtable Colleagues are made up of operators who are industry innovators and thought leaders who purchase millions of dollars in IT products and services each year – collectively representing a vast majority of domestic gaming and hospitality technology spend. The award recipients are recognized annually at the G&L Roundtable Reception Awards Ceremony. The G&L Roundtable Reception is one of the most anticipated evenings of the year, where influential gaming and hospitality executives gather to partake in the red carpet festivities, unwind and socialize after spending the day collaborating and sharing best practices in the unique Roundtable format.

The G&L Roundtable 2018 was as always, good for the soul in rejoining with the community as we do each year to collaborate, discuss and enjoy the friendships old and newly made together. This year we saw many familiar faces now at new companies as expected after a year of many executive movements and more forthcoming. Being with everyone in one setting is always productive, but it’s truly a testament to the dedication and passion that all of these individuals and companies have toward the betterment of our industry.

The property executives in attendance comprised of the G&L Board and Roundtable Colleagues representing a vast majority of gaming and hospitality domestic spend, collaborated together on a wealth of topics, ideas and best practices. The list is a bit exhaustive to cover every single topic, but the top short list encompassed security, cashless floor, cryptocurrency, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), eSports betting, room innovation, Blockchain and peppered with the usual discussions on human capital and legacy systems. Definitively this year their focus centered on innovation in-room technology and eSports betting.

The Sponsor community had many questions they delved into with the properties. As is the case each year, with packing what is really worthy of a 3-day program into one day, the challenge was to gather as many answers and insights as possible within our given timeframe. In broad strokes the main focus was future planning (AI, non-gaming and human capital vs. outsourcing focus), cryptocurrency, mobility, security on many fronts and iOT.

Thank you to our G&L Board, Roundtable Colleagues and Sponsors for a great G&L Roundtable. I am fortunate and grateful for each of you.

Coaching the Technology User Community

It was a Friday afternoon, and we received a call at the Service Desk indicating the gaming floor was down. As usual, a call like this began the standard process for the Technology office – everyone stopped what he or she was doing to investigate. We checked the gaming servers, interfaces and data center and found nothing wrong or offline. This was followed by a tour of the floor to find no “red lights” anywhere. Further investigation and the tracking down of various casino managers and slot employees still revealed no outage. Unable to find anything, we stopped by the Players Club who had reported the problem. The clerk behind the counter indicated that the last few cards he had printed all came back in the hands of upset guests as not working. He checked with his supervisor who said to call IT (old term) and report that the floor was down. The real problem? The first 15 cards in the box had damaged mag stripes on them.

How Innovative Cities Are Taking Control of Broadband

Fiber Optic has transformed the Internet, allowing huge amounts of data to travel instantaneously around the world. Nearly every aspect of our lives has been impacted by the growing Internet of Everything. More recently, some communities have been upgrading old copper and cable systems to provide fiber connections directly into business, cell towers and even homes.

Yet many cities lack the infrastructure needed for the advanced technologies of today.

Casino Marketing

Developing a Successful Reward System

A successful casino marketing strategy will drive revenues throughout the casino and other revenue generating departments, while maximizing the effectiveness of marketing expenditures. The focus of this article is on the player reward strategy a casino employs to attract and retain players. A reward system consists of promotions, comps (complimentary services), points, free play, events and special privileges. At the core of the strategy is the casino’s ability to make players feel appreciated and rewarded in proportion to their spending. From the casino marketeer perspective, the rewards must be directed toward the player’s total net worth. Historically, casinos have viewed player worth based on “average daily theoretical win,” but now with the advent of much improved business intelligence analytics, the player total net worth and potential value including spending in restaurant and other retail venues has become the proper measurement of true value.

Workforce Management Systems in Integrated Resorts

In a market where customer service is paramount, a resort’s employees are its biggest competitive advantage. How the property’s directors manage and engage their employees has a significant impact on the level of customer satisfaction and retention. Happy and engaged employees are better able to deliver a high-level of service that differentiates one resort from another.

Advanced workforce management (WFM) systems provide key tools in addressing core functionality, such as scheduling, task management, time and attendance, controlling labor cost, etc. Though there are some WFM systems that don’t produce the desired results, advanced systems should enhance the productivity of the resort’s workforce with the ability to quickly address customer needs.

Leveraging Data Protecting Peo

Traditionally, the casino is an all cash business with the exception These are exciting times. We live in an era where we take for granted things and situations and insights that couldn’t have been dreamed up until recently. Technology is the most powerful driver of these changes. Without a doubt, this is our time and WE ARE the technological revolution. That’s empowering, and just a tiny bit daunting. With excitement, wonder and magic comes fear, ignorance and responsibility. In the gaming industry, we can and do amass loads of data using technology, but how do we know what to collect and moreover, how can we leverage it to create a better guest experience and grow revenue?

Slots for Fun or Fortune

Casinos! People love the thrill and excitement they offer. The high intensity atmosphere of slots, the massive buffet and of course WINNING make the casino exciting. Winning keeps a player coming back to the same game again and again for another shot to win big. The variety of slots provides gameplay options for all types of gamblers on the casino floor, from a consistent gambler to a Vegas vacationer.

With so many games on the floor it can be difficult to know how a game will play. Hiding behind all the spinning reels, game themes and catchy music is the game’s math model. It determines the reel layouts, pay tables, bonus frequencies and everything else that happens in the game. One game may have lots of small wins, lower volatility and amazing game immersion, while another game has rare wins, high volatility and HUGE WIN opportunities. Luckily, there are some hints that can help identify the style of gameplay players prefer.

In general, slot math models fall into two broad categories commonly termed “Entertainment” or “Gambler.” Catering to these two player types, games are carefully tuned to have a specific style of gameplay. Although not apparent on the surface, the targeted math design provides a dramatic difference in the gambling experience.

Uniguest has earned more brand mandates with major hoteliers than any other provider in the industry and is constantly redefining the gold standard of public-use kiosks and digital signage to ensure the technology meets the demands of tech-savvy users as well as withstands ever-evolving cyber-attacks.

Today, Uniguest manages and supports more than 27,000 guest-facing technology devices across 15,000 client properties in 68 countries, representing more than 100 million unique guest experiences each year.

VPS recovers money that has already been spent on technology and efficiently reduces the costs of net new technology acquisitions. Our gain-share payment model is equally simple and aligns with our client’s interests as VPS is only paid a percentage of the funds we successfully recover or reduce.

Our gaming references can attest to the fact that our analytic tool (The VVI) accurately determines the fully burdened cost of products associated with the data center(server, storage, networking gear, and applications). And when combining this data with our proprietary processes we are able to successfully recover and reduce their technology spend by double digit percentage points.
