About five years ago DIY marketing became trendy. And at the time, it made perfect sense because, “the Glengarry Glen Ross cold call strategy has long been defunct since the advent of voicemail coupled with vigilant pit bull EA’s,” and “why pay for advertising or direct mail when social and email are ‘free’?” Ironically a costly and not so happy ending resulted. Do-It-Yourself marketing, as it turned out, did in fact have costs for content, creative and execution and worse every decision maker’s social feed was littered with ads and their email inbox packed with them as well. When the phone rings off the hook you don’t keep answering it, you turn it off; and that’s exactly what happened.

All of the time and yes, money, spent on marketing was not even being seen by most as folks quickly started ‘unfriending’ and ‘unconnecting’ those ads in social and into the spam filter went all of those creative emails. Now just when remaining DIYer’s attempt to recalibrate their approach, Facebook goes and changes the algorithm for their newsfeed, making DIY marketing even more complicated!

What’s a well-intended DIY marketer to do? First, read Ann Nygren’s article on Facebook’s new algorithm to understand this change and second, consider G&L Social. G&L’s social network is comprised of thousands of industry-only execs who are there solely because of their interest in industry content and it is actually free to all annual G&L Business Partners. I say this humbly as this year we’ve welcomed several business partners who have shared their painful DIY story with us.

Gaming Industry: Performance Review

With another year officially in the books, some of the world’s largest publicly traded gaming operators reported on their fourth quarter earnings and aggregated results for the year. Companies with operations in Macau benefitted from the significant bounce back in gaming revenue, as the region posted $33.2 billion in annual gaming revenue, a 19.1 percent increase compared to 2016. The year-end revenue total marked the best for the world’s largest gaming market since 2011, when revenues increased 41.7 percent to $33.3 billion. In Nevada, the world’s second-largest gaming market, gaming revenues also reported their highest annual growth rate in six years, albeit at a much more modest pace compared to the Southern China resort city. Statewide gaming revenue increased by 2.8 percent in 2017 to $11.6 billion, matching the annual growth rate of 2011.

Want to Keep More of Your Investment Returns? Consider These Moves

Taxes can shrink your realized returns from your investment portfolio, and yet, most investors don’t have a strategy in place for tax-efficient investing.

Comprehensive tax reform passed late last year means many taxpayers are now in a lower tax bracket and will see higher take-home pay. Still, because of the tax law’s cap on state and local tax deductions, some taxpayers are likely to experience an overall increase in their tax bill for 2018.

However, those changes shouldn’t affect your 2017 returns.

National Gaming Results

February was down to last year.

As compared to last year the calendar shows flat. For February 2017 vs February 2016, nationwide shows less half of states gaining and for same comparative period, revenue was flat. Keep in mind that KS, OK and NY (all with new property’s) are a significant portion of these gains and if those were not in the figures, the results would have been a decline.

The Crossroads

My mother once told me, “Cash, luck is the crossroads where opportunity and preparedness meet, and we are all just the sum of our decisions that get us to those crossroads.” (Yes, my middle name is Cash.) As a teenager, I didn’t quite get that, and as an adult I understand it, but like most people, I have tried to wrap the results of my decisions into cloaks of fate and luck hoping that my education and experience has helped to tip the odds in my favor with every decision.

A lot like an advantaged player can bend the odds to get a slightly better outcome than the person next to them, I try to repeatedly become that really advantaged player by studying every nuance of my job, the psychology of the team, the politics of the moment, and I can tell you that I have failed miserably. Oh, I have succeeded as well, and I have done so in glorious fashion, but I have failed in the same glorious fashion! And with every success or failure of epic size and proportion, it usually can be tracked back to one or two good or bad decisions that have led me to that crossroads.

The Importance of a Company’s Vision

I was fortunate to attend a conference earlier this year where leaders in sports and business shared their perspectives, lessons learned and leadership advice. Before I get into the specific content around a company’s vision, I wanted to emphasize a point about conferences that I think is missed.

Attending a conference is a great privilege. A chance to learn valuable information about your field of study, industry or specialized topic. A chance to meet a diverse group of new contacts and build further relationships with colleagues from your company or folks you may have worked with in the past. A chance to learn, hearing how others think – how others are tackling issues.

Many people do not realize that all of the casinos located in California are owned by Native American Tribes. Not the large Card Clubs that have only table games, but the full-fledged casinos that have table games and slot machines, as well as other amenities such as bingo, hotels, entertainment, retail, etc. Many of these casinos rival similar sized casinos in Las Vegas pertaining to gaming product and entertainment, however, Las Vegas has only three casinos with at least 2,500 slot machines, while California has six.

Introduction ISO 27000:2018

As our business operations are more and more reliant on information systems, our proprietary information becomes a valuable asset. These assets are the primary target for unauthorized personnel to try to gain access with the nefarious goal of either stealing or destroying it. In order to protect these assets more effectively, several organizations are implementing Information Security Management Systems (ISMS). These systems follow established best practices and frameworks that ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the information is maintained throughout the normal business operations.

GDPR 2018 Is Coming Fast: Don’t Gamble, Act Now

Even if you don’t operate any properties in the European Union, the General Data Protection Regulation may apply to you!

When it comes to data security, there are few industries as vulnerable to threats as the casino resort and hospitality industry. With vast volumes of personal information (e.g., credit card, personal, etc.) being processed by properties on a daily basis, the industries both consistently rank in the top four of most vulnerable to data breaches (Verizon 2017 Data Breach Investigations).

Properties receive this information from a variety of different sources including: their websites, third-party booking systems, point of sale systems, amenity venues, emails and faxes, phones and walk-ins. And, to complicate matters even further, they generally store this information in several locations. This data, received from so many sources and stored in so many locations, is highly desirable to financially motivated criminals and must be secured and protected.

Digital Transformation Of The Guest Journey

Our industry has long focused on solutions that are operational in nature considered by many properties as enterprise systems. Other than solutions that directly interact with players within the casino, most guests have no idea about or never interact directly with a hotel’s PMS, POS or ERP except when one of those solutions is down which results in a negative perception of the hotel’s brand due to the poor guest experience.

It is no longer a luxury, but a need, for hotel operators to establish guest-facing solutions around a digital experience. A sound digital guest strategy can improve guest service scores and brand identification which directly impacts revenue per available room (RevPAR). At the same time, an improved guest satisfaction score of just 1.1% can result in a 1.5% increase in RevPAR just by making available these solutions during the guest travel experience.

Understanding Guest Value: Revenue Management Strategies Every Casino Needs To Know

Guest valuation is the method used to determine the spending potential of each customer as well as the costs associated with attracting and retaining him or her. In a nutshell, a guest valuation methodology leverages historical spending behavior and trends along with costs to forecast expected profit.

Guest valuation is an important component of revenue management for any property, and particularly for casino hotels. Ever-increasing pressure from the competition combined with rapidly evolving shifts in the demographic profile of guests makes it critical for gaming properties to identify their most profitable customers and to understand their buying behaviors and spending patterns at all stages of the stay.

Emerging Trends: Is Blockchain A Fit For Hospitality?

The hospitality industry has been subject to multiple disruptions over the last few years – from Internet bookings to changes in third party distribution to rate comparison sites and Airbnb. Is
blockchain the next disrupter to the hotel industry? To answer that question, we first need to understand what blockchain is and how it might be applied to the hospitality industry.

What is Blockchain?

A blockchain is a type of data store that can store anything of digital value. Every new transaction is stored in a “block” that gets added to a “chain” of existing records – hence the name “blockchain.” You can also think of blockchain as a linked list of linked lists. A typical blockchain duplicates data across an open network so that all parties in the blockchain can see updates at the same time. Updates are validated through a public verification process that ensures accuracy and security without the need for a central authority.

Mobile Guest Service: Managing the Mobile Technology Movement

What makes a dining experience memorable for guests? What makes it a lasting memory? Is it the same things that make your restaurant stand out?

Diners everywhere will very soon, if they don’t already, expect to connect instantly with their servers, regardless of the venue. As a result, most food-service venues today are adding mobile point-of-sale technology to help bridge the gap. Operators who have embraced mobile connections with their guests are not only elevating the experience – that is, connecting with guests on a personal level – but they also have the means to improve their competitive position, grow revenue and increase guest satisfaction.

Avoiding Facebook’s Zuckerpunch

From its humble beginnings in a Harvard dorm room, Facebook has grown into a behemoth whose monthly active users total one quarter of the planet’s population. In today’s fractured media landscape, it’s a no-brainer for companies looking to engage with customers. That is, until last year’s “fake news” kerfuffle led Team Zuckerberg to tweak their News Feed algorithm in a way that favors friends and family – and buries businesses. Or, more precisely, businesses without a plan.

Facebook is a critical tool for businesses that rely on social media to grow their customer base in an engaging, highly personable way (yes, that’s pretty much everyone reading this column). It’s an easy-to-use platform with incomparable traffic – an ideal channel resorts and casinos can leverage to promote their properties and events.

The 5G Future: Hype and Reality

The wonders of 5G are coming, at least according to wireless equipment and service providers. 5G is the fifth-generation wireless technology that promises to dramatically increase Internet speeds and enable new applications, including autonomous vehicles and virtual reality. If you know little else about 5G, you are not alone. What is the hype, and what is the reality?

Hype: 5G Is Here!
Reality: There Is No 5G Standard Yet

While carriers have begun 5G tests and trials, as of today, there is no fifth-generation wireless standard. There are many conceptual ideas about what 5G will be. Wireless carriers say that 5G will be 5-10X faster than 4G LTE, enabling new applications and services, including autonomous vehicles, virtual reality and augmented reality.

Native American Interviews & Insights With Tribalnet

Everyday we are surrounded by people we learn from. We never, ever stop learning. Or at least we shouldn’t. And out of what we learn, we gain new skills, shift priorities, pick up new habits (good and bad) and adopt new styles of leadership. When all is said and done, even on our worst days – we improve! Every. Single. Day. And hopefully, at the end of each day, we teach and pass on knowledge to others. As readers of G&L, you are part of an industry that I KNOW is pushing the boundaries every day and learning at an insane pace. So, here’s a bit more to absorb and pass on. Four key themes from articles I’ve been on the receiving end of reviewing for TribalNet, by some notable folks in the Native American gaming and technology industry.

Vendor (In)security – Inherited Risk From Your Supply Chain

The gaming and hospitality industries appear to be unique in many aspects, but in reality, share common concerns with all others. Market share, emerging trends or technologies and customer retention or satisfaction. Those are obvious concerns and businesses spend a lot of time and money working to improve in those areas.

Less obvious, however, are those things that are not directly at the forefront of our attention. Information security would certainly be one, but an aspect of that is the security in an organization’s supply chain.

Casino Outlook, ASEAN Tigers: Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam

The focus of this issue’s International Roadtrip is a return to the topic from three years ago — Casino Outlook SE Asia, Summer 2015. The focus will be on the three most dynamic casino gaming markets within the ASEAN region, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. (ASEAN is the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.)

One common thread in the marketing efforts of each these markets is the focus on Chinese tourists. The expenditure of each country on boosting inbound Chinese tourism is a key driver of gaming performance in all ASEAN casino sectors. Chinese visitors were the largest segment by nationality in each of these markets through 2017.

Marketing & Information Technology Teams are Stronger When United

For many years, I have seen marketing and IT groups within the casino industry work against one another. I believe it all started when the first casino marketing employee purchased a technical product that wasn’t properly vetted by a member of IT, and when it failed to work with the existing systems, the network or simply lacked key features, things got pretty ugly. This sort of activity has been going on for a few decades now. In fact, I have seen marketing execs even go as far as sneaking technical purchases, just so they could buy what they wanted without having to ask the IT departments permission. This has created some bad blood in and across the casino industry and although this is a taboo subject, I figured I would expose the problem since I have worked in both IT and as a marketing advisor.

We apply this knowledge in an effort to develop creative solutions to our clients challenges.

Our team has performed analyses in a number of jurisdictions, servicing a broad spectrum of business clients, from governmental agencies to gaming operators. Our areas of focus include the following:

  • Hospitality/Gaming Consulting
  • Information Technology/Web-based Solutions
  • Litigation Support/Expert Analysis
  • Market Analysis

Our vision and goals have been the same since our inception. We strive to provide superior advisory services through a better understanding of our clients and their issues. We obtain this superior understanding through listening closely to our clients’ needs and designing solutions that take into account their unique nature, circumstances and requirements.

To put it simply, we are a solutions resource. Our future is branded by the success of our clients and the quality of our professionals. Our commitment lies therein.

eConnect helps businesses improve their profits through data and video intelligence. The company uses digital video surveillance to view financial transactions and uses behavioral analysis from point-of-sale (POS), casino systems, people counting and other data sources to discover previously unknown problems, thereby reducing financial losses and improving operational inefficiencies; on average eConnect boosts companies’ savings with an ROI between 2% and 11% in the first 12 months.

Our goal is simple: give clients real data and information they can actually use to make better business decisions. We’re completely independent from suppliers, so you can rest assured we’re not here to sell you something – we’re here to make sure you’re getting the most out of what you already have. And, in those instances where you need to expand, replace or upgrade your current technology, our team oversees and directs the entire project, so that you get the technology that best suits your needs, budget and business goals.

Over the past decade, we have had the privilege of working with the industry’s leading brands and have helped clients of all sizes make the most of their technology investments.

So before you upgrade, buy new or add on; engage our team of professionals to analyze your needs, maximize your current investment, and create a plan moving forward that will maximize your investments.

What is the Gaming & Hospitality Research Center (GHRC)?

The GHRC is an online repository of vendor and product research that will help make your technology purchasing decisions faster and more informed using unbiased research coupled with a customizable tool. This research is constructed using Info-Tech Research Groups unbiased and proven research methodology and is targeted to the specific need of the gaming and hospitality industry a first ever of its kind.

Within the GHRC you will find gaming and hospitality vendor landscapes. Vendor landscapes are designed to provide an indepth picture of what to look for in your systems and where each vendor and their product(s) rank within the industry. In addition, your membership in the GHRC supports the creation of additional planned vendor landscapes. Best of all, as a member you have a voice in the future vendor and product research schedule.

I am a vendor, can I join the GHRC?

Absolutely! There’s no better way to see first- hand how you rank against your competition and how the industry evaluates your product quality. The GHRC contains information that your current and potential customers will be reviewing, so it makes sense that you should have access to it as well. The analysis provided is based on primary research with current users and vendor interviews along with publicly available information. The very information executives endlessly try to compile in an apples-to-apples format when they are evaluating you against your competition during an RFP process.

Make better decision faster with Infor Hospitality, a technology partner who understands the industry and can deliver innovative solutions to meet your business needs.

VPS recovers money that has already been spent on technology and efficiently reduces the costs of net new technology acquisitions. Our gain-share payment model is equally simple and aligns with our client’s interests as VPS is only paid a percentage of the funds we successfully recover or reduce.

Our gaming references can attest to the fact that our analytic tool (The VVI) accurately determines the fully burdened cost of products associated with the data center(server, storage, networking gear, and applications). And when combining this data with our proprietary processes we are able to successfully recover and reduce their technology spend by double digit percentage points.
