We are experiencing unusually high turnover in key positions at both properties and vendors over the past few years. Especially in CXO, sales and marketing positions where the primary role is increasing revenue. Why the endless revolving door?

The common pitfalls to long term success in revenue generating positions are expecting revenue driven results too early or setting unachievable goals – or worse moving those goal posts post hiring. This pattern plays out often and only puts the company further behind than when they started hiring. And for the new hire, it’s more wasted time that can’t afford to be wasted.

As of late, many executives share with me, “I thought I was a perfect fit and they didn’t hire me.” Or, on the hiring side, “I’ve had three people in that position this year alone, and I still can’t find the right person.” Based on this, I can’t help but think, in part, the issue that deserves thoughtful attention is truly understanding the unique generational differences in our workforce today.

Starting at the beginning with hiring, the elusive ingredient is always determining if the interviewee is the right “fit.” This is a subjective quality; perhaps visualizing this individual integrating with the current staff or meeting with a potential client. John Fillipe’s article, This Old House, discusses the long-time dilemma of the older executive’s challenge in landing a new career. However, he shares the tremendous benefits of hiring veteran skills especially given today’s workforce, and further identifies steps the seasoned candidate can take to be viewed as a more viable choice than the shiny new model.

Gaming Industry: Performance Review

With another year officially in the books, some of the world’s largest publicly traded gaming operators reported on their fourth quarter earnings and aggregated results for the year. Companies with operations in Macau benefitted from the significant bounce back in gaming revenue, as the region posted $33.2 billion in annual gaming revenue, a 19.1 percent increase compared to 2016. The year-end revenue total marked the best for the world’s largest gaming market since 2011, when revenues increased 41.7 percent to $33.3 billion. In Nevada, the world’s second-largest gaming market, gaming revenues also reported their highest annual growth rate in six years, albeit at a much more modest pace compared to the Southern China resort city. Statewide gaming revenue increased by 2.8 percent in 2017 to $11.6 billion, matching the annual growth rate of 2011.

National Gaming Results

October was up to last year.

As compared to last year the calendar shows losing a Saturday and gaining a Tuesday. For most regional properties, the net effect of this calendar difference equates to a revenue negative of between -2% to -3% as compared to last year. For October 2017 vs October 2016, nationwide shows more than half of states gaining. Gaming revenue gained +3% again keep in mind that KS, MD and NY are a significant portion of these gains.

The year-to-date figures show the country at +3% to same time last year. In 2017 versus 2016, KS opened Kansas Crossing, MD opened MGM National Harbor and NY opened two full casinos and another VLT parlor on Long Island. The results would have been a lesser gain of roughly +1% when states opening new facilities are factored out.

Planning for the Rising Costs of Health Care

Longer lifespans and rising health care costs are driving investors to control their financial exposure to uncovered bouts of care—particularly in retirement.

The United States spends more than $3 trillion a year on health care, or nearly $10,000 per person. Overall spending rose 5.8% in 2015, faster than the pace of inflation or wage growth.

Systemic efforts to rein in costs have met with some success. Consolidated hospital networks are better positioned to deliver treatment at scale and pass savings onto patients and insurers, and an increasing focus on preventative care aims to address medical issues before they snowball into chronic and costly conditions.

Still, another trend in the changing health care system—patients shouldering a larger share of treatment costs—is driving up out-of-pocket expenses. The elderly, who require the most care, often bear the brunt of the costs. It is important to take steps to minimize your financial exposure to uncovered medical costs. But whereas your incentives for saving for retirement are easy to digest—to be able to afford a desired lifestyle after your working years—planning for the less palatable aspects of old age can be more challenging.

Generations in the Workforce (Yes, I’m Talking About Millennials)

I looked back, and I am shocked I haven’t written about millennials in this column. I have written and spoken about millennials and generational issues in the workforce several times in the last few years, so I took some of those writings along with information from a recent talk I heard on the subject from an expert to present to you. (Yes, generations in the workforce is absolutely something you can study, get a Ph.D. in, and be an expert at! Some of the insights here are from speeches by Kim Lear, of Inlay Insights.)

I first wrote about millennials as their own topic in 2014. Even by then we had a significant amount of information about this generation, all the accounting firms were incorporating this generation into their workforce surveys and sociologists were doing deep dives into what makes this generation tick.

Just before that article, I referenced millennials in an article on talent management for this publication. Here’s a portion:

“We often hear that millennials want to move up the corporate ladder too fast, and aren’t loyal. But giving them the opportunity to develop, leads to loyalty. According to a 2012 Deloitte report, “Surveying the talent paradox from the employee perspective,” two of the top three incentives desired by millennials are promotion and job advancement (#1) and leadership development opportunities (#3).”

What’s in a Title?

The Casino General Manager

The Casino General Manager (GM) not only runs the physical operations of the facility while increasing profits, but is the leader of Human Resources and ultimately responsible for company-wide customer service and team member satisfaction. Depending on the type of operation, the GM will typically report to the Owner(s), Board, or Tribal Council who give direction. From that point on, the GM will carry out the directives, while imparting the GM’s own personalities and idiosyncrasies.

Casino GMs typically get their training by working their way up the ladder – the school of hard knocks, if you will. From my perspective, during the last 40 years or so most of the GMs came up through casino operations, finance or marketing. However, in the last decade or so many more were promoted by way of human resources or hospitality (hotel and food & beverage).

This Old House

I was talking with a friend the other day and telling him about being out of work and how much it was taxing me. I explained that it seemed that my experience was pigeon holing me into only top positions. After all what VP or CIO wants to hire a former CIO as a Director? That would take a strong confidence in your company, which I don’t think a lot of people have. I also mentioned that it seemed like there was a lot of inventory out there, meaning that people were getting promoted and moving up, and the “old guard” was no longer being considered.

My buddy just said simply, “John, you’re an old house.”

I asked him to explain that.

Origins of Cryptography and Why It’s Still Relevant Today

Cryptography comes from the Greek words “kryptos” meaning hidden and “graphein” meaning to write. This is the art and science of secret communication. Before we continue, let’s define some basic concepts:

  • • Encryption: process of encoding data in a way that only the approved individual can decode it; the decoding process is called decryption.
  • • Cipher: algorithm (a step-by-step process) used to encrypt and decrypt data.
  • • Plaintext: unencrypted data that is ready to be encrypted.
  • • Cleartext: data that is transmitted or stored unencrypted.
  • • Ciphertext: the data encrypted.
  • • Cryptographic key: variable value needed in the cryptographic algorithm to encrypt or decrypt the data.

Artificial Intelligence:
What’s in It for Hospitality?

Mention AI during a dinner conversation and often the topic turns to a debate on whether it is helpful or hurtful. While many may think artificial intelligence means a bleak future of robots turning against humans and running amok in the streets, it has many more practical applications for businesses, even today. Artificial intelligence makes it possible for machines to learn from their experiences to the point where they can perform human-like tasks. Most artificial intelligence that has application in today’s world, such as self-driving cars or intelligent chatbots, relies on the analytic foundations of deep learning and natural language processing. In this article, we will explore the analytic foundations of artificial intelligence, look at how that may be applied in a hospitality context and even more importantly, prepare you for your next debate on artificial intelligence!

A Strategic Approach to Segmentation for Hotel Revenue Managers

One essential factor of a successful hospitality revenue management program is the ability to segment demand based on customer preference and behavior, including price sensitivity. Traditional revenue management strategies take advantage of the fact that different guests have different preferences and behavior and thus, are willing to pay different rates for the same type of room. Some guests are even willing to change their booking behavior to get a lower price. Selling rooms at different prices to different customers through different channels at various points along the booking cycle puts into action the well-known revenue management objective of providing: the right room, at the right price, at the right time, to the right guest, through the right channel.

Part 2 of The Guest Lifecycle: When the Dining Experience Really Starts

In part one of this two-part series, we established that the guest’s dining experience begins well before he or she ever enters a restaurant. The actual dining is not in itself the beginning, it begins when they’re perusing their dining options. It’s an experience that’s deeply rooted in culture, and with the advent of technology, it’s become an opportunity for restaurants to offer a caliber of guest service that provides for a more complete, perhaps even unique, dining experience. An appreciation of the guest’s decision lifecycle enables restaurants to provide personalized service, enhances the overall experience, in turn affecting the guest’s future decisions.

Why More Executives are Getting Coaches

Everywhere performance counts, you find coaches: the best ballerinas, race car teams, professional tennis players, musicians, SEAL teams and surgeons have coaches. And while it is not yet the norm in the gaming industry, highly-successful executives in many industries have coaches. Jack Welch had a coach, and now he is a coach. Coaching gives human beings an edge in competitive fields where performance counts. In fact, the best players/performers attract the best coaches and vice-versa.

InfoSec From the Beginning
– for Executives

Information security (a.k.a. InfoSec) can be an intimidating subject, especially for those from non-technical backgrounds. Gaming and hospitality executives and management can be, from my perspective, extremely busy and burdened with the day-to-day operations of their organizations, leaving little time to consider and appreciate new concerns facing the industry that do not have immediate bottom line impact. I am not telling you anything that you do not experience every day. However, information security is one of those new concerns that needs your attention.

There is a saying in the industry that “there are two types of businesses: those that have been hacked and know it, and those that don’t know it yet.” This is obviously not true, but it has always been used to draw attention to the potential impact of security breaches.

Bitcoin: A Bubble or the Next Big Thing?

Back in 2014, I wrote a column about a relatively new cryptocurrency called bitcoin that was largely ignored by the muggle world. Very few people knew (or cared) what it was. Today, it’s become a worldwide phenomenon with a roller coaster valuation that rises and dips wildly on a daily basis. The truth is, most people still don’t know much about bitcoin. How does it work? What is it really worth? You’ve got questions, and you’ve come to the right place. Provided you’re not looking for definitive answers – those are hard to come by.

24-Hours to Change The Way You Think

Call it a Hack-a-Thon, a Hack-Day, a Solution-a-Thon, a Code-Day, a FedEx Day, or even a Facebook Freak-On. But, as a very famous ad says, “Just do it.” And if done right, it really won’t cost you anything – but a bit of time.

24 hours to be exact. The term ‘Hack-A-Thon’ is a blend word consisting of the words “hack” and “marathon.” The ‘hack’ part refers to its slang meaning of “program alteration” — not to the illegal act of “hacking.” The “marathon” part refers to the duration of the gatherings – hence the aforementioned “24 hours” in the previous paragraph. Hack-A-Thons are also called Hack Days, Hack Fests or Code Fests.

What Is At-Risk Analysis?

In our last article, we discussed market break points and explained how you can calculate the pattern of geographic disruption when a competitor enters your market. We also provided a visual representation of how the market would be split between the two competitors. The final part of the modeling for breaking points, and a much harder process, is to calculate the potential revenue that is at-risk to your market due to the new competition. For purposes of this analysis, at-risk refers to the quantity of revenue that is currently associated with the zip codes in the areas that due to competition will be potentially lost to your property. Another way to look at this is that your competition, simply by virtue of geography, will own zip codes that you had previously dominated.

Automated Marketing: Why Casinos Are Slow on the Uptake and How to Change that for Your Property

If you put off getting up to speed on automated marketing and what it can do for your property because you thought it was a passing trend, newsflash: it isn’t. Marketing automation is here to stay, and it is changing the face of marketing as we know it in three key ways:

  • It drives down labor costs while increasing customer satisfaction.
  • It drives down marketing costs while increasing revenue.
  • It provides quick results from fast turnaround times.

Agilysys is leading the charge to bring an integrated Pay-at-Table solution for gaming and hospitality venues in the US. It not only drives out the inefficiencies of the current well-established payment model, it also brings a variety of additional benefits to the guest and the restaurant.

Yes, Pay-at-Table is coming to America, and with it comes the same security that international patrons have been afforded for years. It offers more opportunity for restaurants to boost table productivity and increase payment security, while enabling servers to do what they do best: engage with guests on a personal level. Here’s how:

Your business is unlike any other.

“Zero downtime” is on the wish-list for lots of businesses, but when your business runs 24 hours a day, it’s a necessity. Challenges like housing multiple businesses under one roof, managing heavy compliance regulations, and the need to form lasting customer relationships make your gaming business uniquely difficult to securely manage. We get it.

To provide comprehensive, industry-specific solutions, we believe in having a team that has “walked in your shoes.” Our gaming division team understands casino operations across all departments from years of casino pre-opening planning, design, and IT operating experience.

Do you know how your network will be breached? In response to the internal and external threats, lax policies and overlooked vulnerabilities that face every network, the Novacoast Security Team offers comprehensive assessments employing the skills and tactics used by malicious agents to penetrate enterprise networks. We can help.

The latest battlefield: Classification & Control. Most gaming networks we work with are facing a failure of classifying, managing and protecting unstructured data. We can help with that too.

What’s your plan for peace of mind? We have built years of experience helping businesses meet the challenges of the gaming industry. With a strategic partnership leveraging powerful tools from LogRhythm, we help you to reach and maintain compliance, and tighten security on your (and your customers’) info.

VPS recovers money that has already been spent on technology and efficiently reduces the costs of net new technology acquisitions. Our gain-share payment model is equally simple and aligns with our client’s interests as VPS is only paid a percentage of the funds we successfully recover or reduce.

Our gaming references can attest to the fact that our analytic tool (The VVI) accurately determines the fully burdened cost of products associated with the data center(server, storage, networking gear, and applications). And when combining this data with our proprietary processes we are able to successfully recover and reduce their technology spend by double digit percentage points.
