Fall heralds in ‘busy season’ for all of us in the industry with G2E, the G&L Roundtable and TribalNet within 60 days. Many of you from around the world will view the unveiling of new technology, collaborate with colleagues and ultimately seek innovative inspiration to bring back home and budget for in the coming year- all in the continual pursuit of the next ‘new new’ to increase efficiencies, enhance revenue and or your customer experience.

Complementing this notion, innovation is the theme in this edition, and as Ann Nygren’s column Moore of Everything is On the Way aptly shares, by the time this edition releases, some of the innovation we share within may already be obsolete.

It does boggle my mind that each of us are living history in the Age of Innovation. Definitively the most epic chapter in the history of our species, as we leap frog far past anything millions of years of evolution would dictate we had the capacity for.

Gaming Industry: Performance Review

Over the last few years, a number of new casino resorts have opened throughout the eastern United States, namely in New York, Maryland and New Jersey. The opening of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and the Ocean Resort Casino in Atlantic City are two of the latest additions to the expanding East Coast gaming market. Additional developments remain in the pipeline, most notably the $2.5 billion Encore Boston Harbor in Everett, Mass., currently under construction and expected to open in 2019. The openings of these properties will have long-term implications for the gaming industry. The positioning and the amenities included in these properties could revitalize previously declining markets, as well as cannibalize or substantially expand existing gaming markets.

ENSURING THE ENTIRE ORGANIZATION UNDERSTANDS FINANCE

I am a finance professional by training and background. I received a degree in business administration, majoring in accounting and finance, and I spent seven years in public accounting. My first 15 years were in traditional accounting and finance roles like financial reporting, treasury, accounting shared services and capital markets. While I also spent some time in operations, my roots are clearly in finance.

One thing I came to appreciate in this industry was the importance of finance in all areas of the business and the need for all employees to understand it. During my time in public accounting, I was generally around others who had similar backgrounds, so they understood not only the basics of finance and accounting but higher-level concepts as well. Once in a while, when interacting with client personnel who were in operations, we’d run into a situation where we had to explain finance concepts, although these were the exception.

Want to Keep More of Your Investment Returns? Consider These Moves

Establishing a tax management strategy for your investments can help you keep more of your investment returns.

Taxes can shrink your realized returns from your investment portfolio, and
yet, most investors don’t have a strategy in place for tax-efficient investing.

Comprehensive tax reform passed late last year means many taxpayers are now in a lower tax bracket and will see higher take-home pay. Still, because of the tax law’s cap on state and local tax deductions, some taxpayers are likely to experience an overall increase in their tax bill for 2018.

However, those changes shouldn’t affect your 2017 returns.

National Gaming Results

May 2018 was up to last year.

As compared to last year, the calendar shows losing a Monday and gaining a Thursday which would equate to non-effect. For May 2018 vs May 2017, nationwide shows 84% of states gaining and for same comparative period, revenue was up +2.9%. Keep in mind that in May, NV posted a significant gain to prior year and that KS and NY (all with new property’s) and OK (expanded to 24-hour gaming) are a significant portion of these gains and if were not in the figures, the results would have been a smaller gain.

Miracle Whip Vs. Mayonnaise

In many companies, I’ve sometimes felt like I am a minor character in The Clash of the Titans. Being a second-level manager below two warring first-level managers is kind of like doing the mamba in front of a coiled cobra. Each need your support, yet each are on opposite side of an issue. Eventually one side wins out and the other – being at the level they are – will bow out graciously. Yet their resolve to beat out the other seems to grow. The silly part of this scenario is that though competition is healthy, and competing ideas foster new ideas and potential, personality or ego seem to get involved. So instead of a healthy growth process, there seems instead to be a grudge match of wills that can be quite counterproductive.

What’s in a Title?

VICE PRESIDENT of Operations

Most of us are familiar with the large casinos in Las Vegas or Atlantic City, but how many of us have been to a small casino in a rural setting? Across the U.S. there are 435 casinos that have between 50 and 300 slot machines, with the majority of these located in Nevada. Some of the smaller towns include Fernley, Lovelock, Tonopah, Minden and Wells. I thought we would take a peek at one of these smaller operations and chat with an executive from a rural property.

Change Management

I’d like to talk about an important topic: patch management as a subset of the change management process. First, we need to realize that we make changes on live production systems. To guarantee the proper balance between security and the potential risk of creating unforeseen downtime, patch management should be part of a strong change management methodology.

Active Shooter Detection In The Casino Environment

Shortly after the October 2017 shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, casino managers began looking at shifts in security protocols to better prepare for the worst without lessening the casino visitor experience. In the past, your security policies and procedures were securely guarded and distributed only on a strict need-to-know basis. Today, promoting any advances in the safety and security of your property can become a competitive advantage. A carefully crafted messaging campaign that shares your commitment to the safety and security of your casino can help patrons feel safer and keep gaming revenues up.

The Impacts of Open Source Software in Hospitality and Gaming

The recent acquisition of GitHub by Microsoft has changed the landscape for software developers. If you are not familiar with GitHub, it is a very popular software development tool that can help manage version control and source code management functions. What is interesting about this acquisition for Microsoft is that GitHub has been a steadfast tool for Open Source Software (OSS). Microsoft has historically been a Closed Source Software (CSS), or better known as a developer of proprietary software where no outside developer would be allowed to see the internal workings of their code. OSS is code that is developed and reviewed by anyone in the open community. What is also interesting is that this software is free for anyone to download and use. This article will look into how OSS has and will impact the Hospitality and Gaming industry from a security and industry perspective.

Are you ready for a data scientist, or are you building a culture of analytics?

You might be forgiven for thinking a data scientist is a mythical creature that is rarely found in the hospitality world. Part mathematician, part computer scientist and part trend-spotter, data scientists are analytical data experts who have the technical skills to solve complex problems – and the business acumen to explore what problems need to be solved. Intrigued? In this article we will explore what data scientists do, how they do it and whether your organization is ready for a data scientist skillset.

BI and Machine Learning for Hospitality

The hospitality and travel transportation industry are full of software companies providing targeted solutions to solve a specific need or operational problem. Many of the most popular solutions are in the lodging and food and beverage side of the business, such as property management or cruise cabin management systems. The software is designed to manage the overall hotel reservation and guest accounting functions for a hotel. The same can be said for companies that sell point of sale systems. Like a PMS, hotels and cruise lines are required to have a POS to manage F&B guest transactions that feed into the property’s financial and supply chain systems. Rental car agencies merge reservation systems with enterprise level asset and preventive maintenance solutions.

25 Years Quietly Setting The Gold Standard In Loyalty: Five Things I’ll Bet You Didn’t Know About GHS

DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS OF A WORLD CLASS LOYALTY SYSTEM

The challenge in writing about someone you have known and worked with for more than 20 years is to avoid droning on like a bad self-help book and to deliver the help without the fluff. I trust you will find this feature as relevant as the company I’m going to tell you about.

I first worked with Gary Kortz, founder and president of Gaming Hospitality Solutions (GHS), in 1997. I was working in a casino marketing capacity at Mohegan Sun, and GHS was breaking down technology barriers to enable Mohegan to compete aggressively in the Foxwoods-dominated market. We were creating marketing programs that had never been considered, and GHS was creating tools that expanded the possibilities while simplifying the entire process. Since then, I’ve watched Gary grow GHS and perfect a new paradigm in loyalty-marketing tools.

Moore Of Everything Is On The Way

In 1965, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore famously predicted that computing would dramatically increase in power at an exponential pace. Strictly speaking, Moore’s Law relates to the ever-increasing number of transistors that can be crammed onto a silicon chip. But it’s also become shorthand for the radical advances that computers and technology continue to make with each passing nanosecond. And there’s no end in sight.

Tectonic shifts in technology and massive marketplace disruptions are becoming routine. Every single day, the advent of something new and amazing is announced. The pace of innovation today is dizzying. Mind-blowing. You can’t find an adjective big enough to qualify as hyperbole. Writing a quarterly technology column is like building a futuristic attraction at Disney’s Tomorrowland – by the time it’s done, it’s virtually obsolete.

CHANGING THE NAME

Thank you for taking the time to read my commentaries and opinions. To be honest, when Jeannie asked me to write for G&L, my first thought was what would I write about? And would anyone find a long article about the 2016 World Champion Chicago Cubs interesting to read about magazine after magazine? For shame if you said you wouldn’t find that interesting. Instead, I thought it would be far less outlandish to take this time to discuss the very name of our profession, Information Technology.

Bridging The Communications Gap Between Technology And Business

In this quarter, my fourth article for G&L, I want to focus on communications between business units, specifically what’s happening – or not – with business leadership and Information Technology and Security. I have attempted to touch on this subject in my previous contributions, but simply don’t believe that I did it justice.

In this edition, I rely quite heavily on the work of the fantastic Claire Tills, a communications researcher that focuses on information security. Her work, including case studies of specific incidents, can be found on her blog, www.clairetills.com, and she is also very active on Twitter, @clairetills.

Swedish National Gambling Association

In this issue’s International Roadtrip, we make a stop in Scandinavia for a chat with Jenny Nilzon, CEO of the Swedish National Gambling Association, also known as SPER.

G&L: Could you give us a bit on your background with the gambling industry? What led you into the Swedish Gaming Association?

JN: I am basically a marketer and change leader. I have previously been the CEO of a communications agency and then worked six years at Novamedia, the operator company who runs Sweden’s largest lottery, the Postcode Lottery. There I first worked on establishing a new lottery and TV concept and later become involved in building a public affairs department when the focus on gambling politics needed to be intensified. When SPER was later transformed from an ethical council to a trade organization, I was asked to lead that change. With some knowledge of the gambling industry and as an experienced change leader, it was a perfect match.

Cashless Casino Transactions

Traditionally, the casino is an all cash business with the exception of markers, paying with a credit or debit card for hotel, retail, entertainment or hotel purchases. Quite a long time ago I asked myself, why can’t casino transactions be cashless, too? The revolution toward a cashless society started in the late 1990s when a company called PayPal was launched, and their purpose was to deploy a payment processor where you can pay for auctions, plane tickets, ridesharing and more with a digital wallet. Apple Pay, another digital wallet service, was launched several years later, and it quickly became mainstreamed.

Successful Slots And Math Design

Slot machines! People love them. Math? Not so much. The casino industry secret: there are unique math models behind every slot machine. Casinos have a variety of games on their floor with a range of experiences to suit every type of player. It’s common for a player to have a great experience on one slot game and a not-so-great session on a different game. What makes one slot game better than another? The math behind each game plays the ultimate role.

The creation of each new slot game starts with the initial game concept. The early design stages are fueled by the desired game features and mechanics. Most designers have an idea in mind of how they want their game to play, including game volatility and frequency of features. This initial concept then leads to further gameplay choreography, matching the math and gameplay to the overall theme of the game. The slot designer uses past and current knowledge of proven game successes to create new innovative titles that resonate with players. This industry insight coupled with a deep understanding of slot game conventions, game theming, art styles and math design comprise the slot designer’s tool belt.

Sports Wagering Challenges and Opportunities

The excitement of wagering on sports is now spreading across the country after the Supreme Court decision to remove Nevada’s monopoly on legalized sports betting. While many states view this as a great opportunity for more tax revenues, the opportunity will come with many challenges and adventures, including profitability of sports wagering, state licensing and taxation, rules for and types of wagering permitted and combating fraud and illegal activity. To gain insight on the financial impact that may soon be experienced in other states, it is appropriate to review Nevada’s results. Casinos have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on physical race and sportsbook facilities. Elaborate sportsbooks are often considered a key component of a casino operation to bring in high-end gamblers. But with the narrow operating margins of sportsbooks, these are not highly profitable, if profitable at all. Figure 1 depicts some interesting statistics for Nevada based on averages for the last three calendar years.

The Data of Guest Experience

As slot manufacturers work to identify and deliver winning slot cabinets and slot themes to operators, the number of options a casino operator has from both a purchase and setup standpoint has grown dramatically in the last few years. Every year, casino operators have dozens of potential new cabinets and hundreds of new themes to choose from, and the reality is that capital for these decisions is heavily scrutinized. Internally, casino operators must also balance their available capital against all the changes they need to make, knowing full well that they will not be able to make every needed change. This environment creates a situation where operators must turn to deeper and more strategic-level data to truly assess their best opportunities.

Full House: Technology For the New Global Gaming Landscape

The casino model that once revolved around gambling revenue is rapidly changing with multiple factors contributing to this global trend. One of the most significant of these is the growing number of players entering the global casino marketplace.1 Within the U.S., people can now gamble in nearly every state in the country. Canada’s gambling industry is booming.2 And nearly half of all surveyed Brazilian nationals (45.7 percent) say they want casinos.3 In addition, Asian jurisdictions like Taiwan, South Korea and Japan are tracing Macau’s footsteps as they look to legalize casino gaming within integrated resort settings.

This research is constructed using Info-Tech Research Groups unbiased and proven research methodology and is targeted to the specific need of the gaming and hospitality industry a first ever of its kind.

Within the GHRC you will find gaming and hospitality vendor landscapes. In addition, your membership in the GHRC supports the creation of additional planned vendor landscapes. Best of all, as a member you have a voice in the future vendor and product research schedule.

I am a vendor, can I join the GHRC?

Absolutely! There’s no better way to see first- hand how you rank against your competition and how the industry evaluates your product quality. The GHRC contains information that your current and potential customers will be reviewing, so it makes sense that you should have access to it as well. The analysis provided is based on primary research with current users and vendor interviews along with publicly available information. The very information executives endlessly try to compile in an apples-to-apples format when they are evaluating you against your competition during an RFP process.

VPS recovers money that has already been spent on technology and efficiently reduces the costs of net new technology acquisitions. Our gain-share payment model is equally simple and aligns with our client’s interests as VPS is only paid a percentage of the funds we successfully recover or reduce.

Our gaming references can attest to the fact that our analytic tool (The VVI) accurately determines the fully burdened cost of products associated with the data center(server, storage, networking gear, and applications). And when combining this data with our proprietary processes we are able to successfully recover and reduce their technology spend by double digit percentage points.
